ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

Grafton Regional Gallery is a place that creatively strengthens and connects people, place and country through small moments and big ideas. GRG is an inclusive, imaginative and ingenious gallery that inspires and challenges cultural perceptions and delivers unexpectedly global experiences for our region. 

APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN THROUGHOUT THE YEAR WITH PROPOSALS BEING ASSESSED AT LEAST TWICE YEARLY.

Applications are welcome for Solo and Group/Collective exhibitions.

WHAT WE PROVIDE WHEN YOU EXHIBIT WITH US
  • Artist fee – fees are based on NAVA standard rates. Fees are payable on receipt of an invoice from the artist at the opening of the exhibition.
  • Professional Installation - our curator and team will support the exhibition with professional advice and installation including artwork labels.
  • Marketing and promotion - through our website, social media, media releases and more.
  • Professional photographic documentation of the exhibition installation.
  • Opening event - shared with other exhibitions opening at the gallery on the same day.
  • Insurance coverage - for the exhibition while the artwork is on site at the gallery.
  • Public programming opportunities - would you like to share your story and practice with others? You may like to do an artist talk or present a workshop to support your exhibition. Public program fees are payable (NAVA rates apply).
WHAT YOU PROVIDE WITH YOUR EXHIBITION

If your exhibition proposal is successful, you are expected to:

  • Supply the artwork ready to hang or install. We will confirm specific installation details or requirements before we go ahead with your exhibition
  • Information about your work, your exhibition and your practice, along with some images so we can promote your exhibition. We will let you know what formats we need.
  • Arrange transport of your work to GRG, and arrange collection of your artwork at the conclusion of the exhibition.  

    Further details will be negotiated with successful applicants specific to their exhibition.

    Applications will be accepted using our online form.

    Please take the time to gather all the information needed to support your application before filling in the form.

    You will need to provide your contact information, together with a SINGLE PDF file or audio/video file up to 5 minutes in duration including the following:

    • About your practice: Artist Statement (max 250 words)
    • About your project: Exhibition Proposal (max 300 words)
    • A short summary description of the project/ideas (30 words suitable to use as a social media post)
    • Up to 10 Images of work (Work in progress images or, from any point in your practice) To submit video files provide a link to your video/audio hosted on another site (eg. YouTube/Vimeo). Large files will not be accepted with your application.
    • About your experience: Artist CV or Short Artist Bio (max 250 words)
    • Links to social media/website (optional, we won’t assess your application by number of followers or your posts, we’ll use this to give us an idea about your practice. Please ONLY send us a professional artist profile, we don’t need to see your personal family photos etc.)
    • Any additional relevant support material (optional)
    • If there is anything you would like us to know when reading your proposal, please be sure to share it.
    • Which of our gallery spaces you have a plan for and when you would like to exhibit –  ABOUT OUR GALLERY SPACES.
    • Installation – do you need to be on-site for installation of your work? Are there any special considerations we should be aware of – eg. suspending from ceilings, size of work, potential challenges handling the work, hazardous or unconventional materials, cultural considerations?
    • Any technical equipment you might need – GRG has a small selection of projection, screen and AV equipment available, use is by negotiation and may not be available for your project.
    • Any public programs or gallery activations that are a part of your project (apart from an artist talk) – do you have a great idea for a workshop, forum, performance or other event during your exhibition.

    Your application to exhibit with us should include enough information to show us how you can help GRG to provide programming that is relevant, targeted, and provide maximum opportunity for our community to engage and participate in the gallery’s programs.

    HOW WE ASSESS SUBMISSIONS

    Your proposal will be assessed by Grafton Regional Gallery Exhibitions Programming Team. 

    The Exhibitions Programming Team meets to consider proposals at least TWICE PER YEAR.

    We will acknowledge receipt of your submission within 10 days. Please allow up to 6 months for your submission to be properly assessed.

    Your proposal may be considered in conjunction with touring exhibitions and commissioned exhibitions.

    Even though your proposal may not be initially successful it may be retained and considered in subsequent rounds.

    The Exhibitions Programming Team considers:

  • North Coast artists and NSW artist applications are considered favourably, but interstate and international applications are also welcome.
  • Clarity of theme/concept of the exhibition proposal.
  • The potential and creative talent of the applicant.
  • The potential of the applicant to contribute to Grafton Regional Gallery’s reputation.
  • The suitability of the proposed exhibition to match the gallery space, including any safety and structural considerations of the space.
  • The mix and diversity of artists, art forms and broader context of the proposed exhibition across the exhibition calendar and the programs of other galleries in the region.
  • Adequate information to support the application, and consideration of how the proposed exhibition will be installed in the gallery space.
  • Consideration of public program opportunities e.g. artist talk, artist in residence, workshops, performance etc.
