Re-Figuring Ground
Six artists from NSW have engaged with the Gallery to develop queer retellings of artworks from the Collection.
In this exhibition, six artists from New South Wales have been invited to engage with the Grafton Regional Gallery’s collection, in order to develop queer retellings of the collection, its artworks, and the themes it presents. The artists whose works are featured in this exhibition are Alun Rhys Jones, Blake Lawrence, Deborah Breckenridge, Jana Moser, Kim Leutwyler and Travis Paterson.
The premise for Re-Figuring Ground draws on research by Andrew W. Gorman-Murray in his paper, ‘So, where is queer? A critical geography of queer exhibitions in Australia’1, where he found an uneven geographical distribution of exhibitions with queer content in Australia. Gorman-Murray found there was huge imbalance between regional and metropolitan Australia, with little queer content in the regions.
Re-Figuring Ground aims to address this disparity by centering queer stories. It is also an opportunity to be critically reflective of the museum and gallery practices that have shaped Grafton Regional Gallery and a chance to reframe how artists and members of the LGBTQIA+ community have been represented in the region and beyond.
